  1. What does a SquareTrade plan cover?

SquareTrade Protection Plans covers all mechanical/electrical failures that happen during normal use, such as button failure, depleted (non-replaceable) batteries, and non-responsive charging ports or audio jacks. Plans that include accident protection also cover damage from accidents like drop and spills.

If a protected item is damaged and we determine it can be repaired, we cover 100% of the cost of parts and labor. If your item is irreparable, we’ll contact you to discuss options for replacing your item. Coverage lasts for the term of your plan or until the coverage amount of your plan (generally equal to item purchase price) is used up.

  2. My item is still covered by the manufacturer's warranty. Can I still file a claim with SquareTrade?

If your item is still covered by the manufacturer (typically a year from purchase date) and the issue is covered by the manufacturer’s warranty, we’ll ask that you contact them first. That way, you can save your SquareTrade plan for when you really need it – after the manufacturer’s warranty expires.

However, if your item was accidentally damaged and your SquareTrade plan covers accidental damage, you should contact SquareTrade regardless of whether the manufacturer’s warranty has expired.

  3. Does SquareTrade cover software issues?

Unfortunately, SquareTrade does not cover any software-related issues. In most cases, software failures can be fixed by reloading your item’s operating system or firmware. Be sure to back up any data that you don’t want to lose before attempting to reload your operating system.

  4. Does SquareTrade cover loss and theft?

A SquareTrade Protection Plan is an extended warranty, not insurance. That means we only cover things that go wrong with your item — not loss or theft. If your item is lost or stolen, you can cancel your plan and get a refund for the time left on it. For info on canceling a plan, go here.

  5. How can I tell if my plan covers accidents like drops and spills?

To find out when your plan covers accidental damage, check the purchase confirmation email or welcome kit you received when you purchased your plan.

If there’s coverage for drops and spills on your plan, it will say Accidental Damage from Handling (ADH) under Coverage Type.

If you’re having trouble finding your purchase confirmation email in your inbox, try searching for an email from If you’re still unable to find your purchase confirmation or welcome kit, feel free to schedule a callback with one of our Specialists by clicking here.
